Tips for Military Moves:

Military OneSource has a wealth of information to help you with every step of a PCS. For one person, or a family, they have information about available relocation assistance. They can aid by providing resources and financial assistance for individuals and families.

Are you in Military Housing? What do you need to know about your new home before moving in? What is covered (utilities, insurance, etc.) and what’s not? Will you need deposits for utilities and can someone set up internet or cable services before you arrive so you can stay connected?

New schools? While you might not be able to visit in advance with your child, perhaps you can set up a video conference with their new teachers or administrators. Will the school have the classes, programs and activities your child is used to? Find out in advance what documents they need to transfer student records and any required medical exams and vaccinations.

Look for parenting groups in the area you are moving to (on and off base); they can often help you navigate the area and recommend parks and places to visit. They can also recommend help in finding childcare. Some can be found online in groups such as Nextdoor and on Facebook.

Before you move in-be sure the internet, utilities, and anything else you need are set up in advance. If you are in Military Housing, what’s included?

Research and find new doctors, dentists, and veterinarians in your new community. Make sure they are accepting new patients, transfer your records. Are these services available on base?

Find a new pharmacy and transfer your prescriptions. Is there a pharmacy on base?

Consider what you are taking with you. Is it time to downsize and donate some items? When did you last use that small kitchen appliance?

Look for groups in your new community (or base) with similar interests, such as book clubs and hiking groups.  Nextdoor, Facebook and Eventbrite are good places to look for upcoming events and clubs to join.

Know where the nearest emergency room and urgent care centers are located. Is there a 24-hour vet nearby? Speaking of pets, locate the local dog park and check-out area pet sitters.
