Hidden Cameras in Vehicle Rentals: Why Are They There and How to Find Them?

You’ve been traveling for hours. Flight delays, crowded airports and planes, you’re tired, cranky and maybe a little smelly-but the end is near! You just need to pick up your rental car and head for the hotel. But wait, is that a camera watching me?

Do you remember the song, “Somebody’s Watching Me”? Singer Rockwell bemoaned the lack of privacy in 1983 and in the 21st century, cameras seem to be everywhere.

If you’ve rented a car in recent months and felt the same way, you might be right. Many rental cars are now equipped with hidden (and sometimes not hidden) cameras.

Hidden Cameras in Rental Cars

Why Cameras?

Some rental car companies install cameras in their cars for a variety of reasons. Others do not install cameras.  If this is an issue for you, it’s important to ask the rental car company what their policy is and if they have cameras in their cars.

The top reason a rental car may come with a camera is for security purposes. Cameras can prevent theft and unauthorized use of vehicles. It can also help you, the renter, if the car is damaged and you are not responsible (for instance, the car is broken into). Cameras can also record if the car is used in any illegal activity. Rental car companies might also use the camera to monitor a customer’s driving habits as data may capture if a renter follows traffic laws and is using the vehicle responsibly.  Captured data can also evaluate the condition of the car when it’s returned at the end of the rental period.

Privacy Concerns

When you rent a car, read the rental agreement carefully before signing it. Look for any clauses that mention cameras or surveillance equipment. You can also ask the car rental company directly about their camera policy and choose whether you want to book with that company. Another consideration: bring your own dashcam with you or your personal GPS tracker. Some dashcams have built-in GPS. This will provide you with your own proof should something go wrong.

With the rising cost of insurance and repairs, it’s likely that cameras in rental cars will grow in the coming years.

What about hidden cameras? That is a possibility in some rental cars, albeit rare. Renters should be aware of this and take precautions to protect their privacy. Using a flashlight, or the flashlight app on your phone, look for small lenses, wires, odd objects, glints of metal or anything that looks out of place. These may be located near USB port. Some phone apps may be able to pick up frequencies from the camera.

Large companies, such as Hertz, have been known to have cameras in rental cars and trucks (including moving vans, box trucks and heavy-duty pickup trucks). Their NeverLost 6 system includes a dashcam and other cameras.  Avis, another popular car rental company has a system called Avis X.

It’s advised to ask any rental car company about their use of interior cameras before booking if this is an issue for you.

Devices to find hidden cameras.

EyeSpySupply, an online retailer based in Texas, recently blogged about this subject. It shared, “There are several different types of hidden camera detectors on the market, each with its unique features and capabilities. Some common types include radio frequency (RF) detectors, camera lens detectors, and infrared detectors.”

Continuing, “RF detectors are designed to pick up radio frequencies emitted by wireless cameras, while camera lens detectors use light to find hidden camera lenses. Infrared detectors can detect infrared lights that are often used in night vision cameras. Each type of detector has its advantages and limitations, so it’s essential to choose one that best suits your needs.”

Beyond privacy in a rented vehicle, many people search for hidden cameras in hotel rooms, home and apartment rentals.

Is it legal?

The laws and legal implications of placing cameras in rental cars vary depending on the jurisdiction. As most people are traveling when they rent a car, it’s good to research this in advance. The laws in some areas may require the rental car company to disclose the presence of cameras in vehicles. For those renting a truck/van for local moves, you should check with your city or county.

Be aware of your rights to privacy and take measures to protect yourself if you have any concerns about having a camera inside your rental car.

Please note that dashcams, GPS, rear (back-up) cameras and other technology are found in many newer vehicles and are considered safety features.

What can you do?

Ask the car rental company in advance if this is an issue for you. If you are uncomfortable with having a camera in your rental, shop around. Most major airports have a variety of car rental companies to choose from. Weigh your options: if you are a good driver and don’t have privacy concerns, then seek the best rental rates for the car type you wish to rent. These can vary greatly depending on the airport, time of year and type of car you want. If you are considering renting an EV (electric vehicle), check in advance to identify charging stations that will work best for you during your trip. As always, read any contract carefully before you sign it. Look for clauses about refueling requirements, driver restrictions and added insurance.
